When you place an order on WhatsApp or on the restaurant's store page, the last step is payment. Which methods you see depends on the store. Most offer UPI and debit or credit cards, and some also accept cash on delivery. This page explains each option and what to do when something goes wrong.
Paying online with UPI or card
If you choose online payment, the restaurant's assistant sends you a payment link in the chat, or the store page takes you straight to the payment screen. The link opens a secure payment page run by Razorpay, a payment provider used across India. Restaurants outside India may use Stripe instead; the steps are the same.
- Tap the payment link in the chat, or the Pay button on the store page.
- Check the amount at the top of the page. It should match your order summary.
- Pick a method: UPI (any UPI appor any UPI app), debit or credit card, or whatever else the page shows.
- For UPI, either tap your UPI app to approve the request, or enter your UPI ID and approve the request that appears in your app. Enter your UPI PIN only inside your UPI app, never in the chat.
- For cards, enter the card details and complete the OTP from your bank.
- Wait for the success screen. Within a few seconds you get a WhatsApp message confirming that the payment was received and the order is placed.
The restaurant does not see your card number or UPI PIN. Only the payment provider handles those details.
Paying cash on delivery
If the store offers cash on delivery, pick it at checkout and pay the rider when the food arrives. Keep the exact amount handy if you can. Some riders also accept UPI at the door, but that is up to the restaurant, so do not count on it.
Not every store offers cash, and some switch it off for large orders or new customers. If you do not see the option, the store has not enabled it for your order.
If your payment fails
Failed payments are common and usually easy to fix. Try these in order:
- Wait a minute, then check your bank or UPI app. If the money was not debited, open the payment link again and retry. Links stay valid for a limited time; if yours has expired, reply in the chat and ask for a fresh link.
- If money was debited but you did not get a confirmation, do not pay again. Reply in the chat with the time of the payment and the UPI or transaction reference. The restaurant can check on their side.
- If the amount was debited and the order still was not placed, the payment provider reverses it automatically. This usually takes a few working days, depending on your bank.
- If UPI keeps failing, try a card or a different UPI app, or ask the store whether cash on delivery is available.
Common questions
Is it safe to pay through a link sent on WhatsApp?
Yes, as long as the link came from the restaurant's own number in the same chat where you placed the order, and the amount matches your order. Never share your UPI PIN, card PIN or OTP with anyone in a chat. A genuine payment page asks for those only inside your UPI app or on your bank's page.
Can I pay part online and part in cash?
No. Each order is paid in one way. Choose online or cash at checkout, and the whole amount goes through that method.
Will I get a bill?
Your order confirmation on WhatsApp lists every item and the total. Many stores also attach a GST bill with the order or send it in the chat when you ask.
