First-party ordering

First-party ordering is ordering on a channel the restaurant owns, such as its own website or WhatsApp number, rather than through a third-party app.

First-party ordering is ordering that happens on a channel the restaurant itself owns and controls: its own website, app, WhatsApp number or store page. The term is used in contrast to third-party ordering, where a marketplace or delivery app sits between the restaurant and the customer, takes the order, keeps the customer data and charges a commission. In India the same idea is more often called direct ordering; first-party is the term you will see in US and global restaurant-industry writing and on platform pricing pages.

Why it matters

The word "party" is about who owns the relationship. On a first-party order, the restaurant holds it: the customer's phone number, address and order history are yours, the payment comes to your account, and the brand the customer remembers is yours. On a third-party order, the app owns all of that and rents you the customer one order at a time. The difference decides whether you can run a loyalty offer, send a festival menu, or win back someone who has not ordered in a month. The post on direct ordering for restaurants covers the margin side; the repeat-business side is in restaurant customer retention.

Example

A cafe in Pune has 2,000 customers who ordered through delivery apps last quarter. It knows none of their numbers. The same cafe has 400 customers who ordered on WhatsApp and said yes to offers. When it launches a monsoon menu, it can message those 400 directly, at well under a rupee per message, and typically a few percent will order the same week. If 20 of them order at ₹350, that is ₹7,000 of revenue from a message that cost a few hundred rupees. The 2,000 app customers can only be reached by paying the app for placement, and even then the cafe never learns who they are.

Tezzu is a first-party channel: orders arrive on your own WhatsApp number and store page, and the customer list sits in your dashboard.
