UPI

UPI is India's real-time payment system that moves money between bank accounts instantly via a UPI ID, QR code or link, with zero MDR for the business.

UPI, the Unified Payments Interface, is India's real-time payment system, run by NPCI, that moves money directly between bank accounts using a UPI ID, a QR code or a payment link, through any UPI app. Payments are instant, work 24 hours a day including holidays, and carry no merchant discount rate for the business under government policy. For food businesses it has replaced cash as the default way to pay, from a ₹20 chai to a ₹5,000 party order.

Why it matters

UPI is cheap and universal, which is why almost every Indian restaurant accepts it. The weak spot is confirmation. A static QR on the counter or a UPI ID sent in chat means the customer pays into your account and you find out only when you check the phone or the customer sends a screenshot, and screenshots can be edited. For orders that are prepared before the customer arrives, that gap costs time and occasionally food. A UPI payment taken through a payment gateway or a UPI-aware ordering system confirms itself: the order is marked paid the moment the bank approves it. The difference between a static QR, a dynamic QR and a payment link is explained in UPI payments for restaurants.

Example

A momo stall takes 150 orders a day, 120 of them on UPI, with an average bill of ₹120. With a static QR, the owner checks the phone after every payment and loses a few seconds each time, and once a week someone walks off on a ₹240 order with a screenshot that never cleared. With UPI through a gateway on a WhatsApp order, the ₹120 shows as paid in the order itself, there is no MDR on the UPI leg, and if the gateway charges no platform fee on UPI the full ₹14,400 of a day's UPI takings is settled. How to spot a doctored screenshot in the meantime is covered in fake payment screenshots.

On Tezzu, UPI payments on WhatsApp and store orders go through Razorpay, so the order shows as paid in your dashboard without a screenshot.
