Shiprocket for Sweet Shops: Shipping Diwali Boxes Across India

A sweet shop that wants to ship sweets across India for Diwali has two problems to solve: which mithai survives three days in a courier box, and how to take a hundred gift-box orders from customers in other cities without retyping a hundred addresses into a courier website. The first is a product question. The second is what the Shiprocket integration on Tezzu is for.

This post walks a sweet shop through the Diwali season: picking a shippable box, pricing it so shipping does not eat the margin, the flow from a WhatsApp order to a courier pickup, what the dashboard looks like while fifty parcels are in transit, and the calendar for opening and closing pre-orders.

Which mithai can travel

The courier test is simple: will the sweet be fine after two to five days in a cardboard box at room temperature, on bad roads? Fresh dairy sweets fail it. Dry sweets pass it. Build the Diwali box from the second group.

Ships wellShips with careDoes not ship
Dry fruit laddoos, chikki, gajakKaju katli, besan laddoo within shelf lifeRasgulla, rasmalai, anything in syrup
Namkeen, mathri, shakarparaSoan papdi in a rigid tinMilk cake, kalakand, fresh peda
Dates, roasted nuts, dry fruit packsAnjeer rolls, dry fruit barfi in sealed packsGulab jamun, jalebi, malai sweets

A workable Diwali shipping box is 500 g to 1 kg of dry sweets and namkeen, individually sealed, in a rigid gift box. Keep the fresh counter sweets for local delivery inside your zones and for pickup. The two lanes can sit on one menu as long as the shippable boxes are named as such, "ships across India" in the description, so a customer in Pune does not order rasmalai from Kolkata. The courier rules and packaging methods are covered in shipping homemade food across India.

Pricing the box so shipping does not eat the margin

Shiprocket charges per shipment by weight slab and destination, on a rate card published on their site that changes from time to time, so check it rather than relying on any blog. For the arithmetic here, assume a 1 kg parcel costs you around ₹90 to a metro and around ₹140 to a remote PIN; replace those with your own last twenty shipments once you have them.

Line on a Diwali boxAmount
500 g dry fruit and mithai assortment, contents cost₹340
Rigid gift box, inner trays, bubble wrap, outer carton₹70
Courier, 1 kg slab including packaging weight (illustrative)₹90 to ₹140
Tezzu per-order charge₹10
Box price to the customer₹899
Margin after everything₹339 to ₹389

Two decisions follow. First, weigh the packed box, not the sweets. A 500 g assortment ships as a 900 g to 1 kg parcel once the box and filler are counted, and courier slabs usually step every 500 g, so the difference between 990 g and 1,010 g can be a whole slab. Second, decide whether shipping is inside the price or on top. For a gift box, inside the price is cleaner: "₹899, shipped anywhere in India" reads better than ₹799 plus ₹100 at checkout. For a shop selling by the kilo, a flat shipping charge with free shipping above ₹1,499 works better. The decision logic is in when Shiprocket makes sense for food and packaged products.

From a WhatsApp order to the courier pickup

Here is a Diwali box order, end to end.

  1. A customer in Bengaluru whose parents live in your city sees your Diwali box on Instagram and messages your WhatsApp number, or opens the store page.
  2. The bot shows the Diwali box category. They pick the ₹899 assortment, quantity two, and add a gift note.
  3. At checkout they enter the full postal address with PIN code and pay by UPI or card. Prepaid is the norm for parcels; a refused cash-on-delivery courier costs you both ways.
  4. The order appears in your dashboard and staff app like any other, marked for shipping rather than for a delivery zone.
  5. You pack the two boxes, weigh the parcel, and from the order screen push it to Shiprocket with the weight and dimensions.
  6. Shiprocket assigns a courier and returns an AWB tracking number, which is stored on the order. You share it with the customer in the same WhatsApp chat.
  7. The courier collects from your shop on its next run. Tracking updates show against the order in your dashboard until it is delivered.

Nobody retyped the address. That matters more than it sounds: a wrong PIN code is the most common reason a parcel comes back, and a parcel that comes back is a box of sweets you cannot resell after Diwali.

What this looks like on Tezzu

Before the first parcel, four things are set up once. A Shiprocket account, created on their site with their KYC done and their prepaid wallet loaded. A verified pickup address, your shop, with a phone number someone answers in the afternoon when couriers call. Package weights and dimensions for each box, measured packed. And the Diwali box items on your menu, in their own category, with the shipping lane named in the description.

From then on, the order screen does the work. A shippable order shows a push-to-Shiprocket action; you enter the packed weight and dimensions, confirm, and the AWB comes back onto the order within moments. The tracking status updates on the order as the courier moves it, so during the Diwali rush the orders list doubles as your shipping board: packed, picked up, in transit, delivered. If a customer messages on the day of pickup to add a box of namkeen, you cancel the shipment from the same order screen, repack, and push it again.

Payment runs through Razorpay for UPI and cards, so every parcel is prepaid before it is packed. The ₹10 per order is the same for a shipped box as for a local delivery, and there is no commission. Local orders for fresh sweets carry on through your delivery zones and pickup points on the same menu, and the dashboard shows both lanes in one list. Once the box is delivered, the customer gets the rating request on WhatsApp, which for a gift is often the only way you learn whether it arrived intact. The setup screens are in Shiprocket in Tezzu, and the full feature list is on the features page.

The Diwali calendar for shipped boxes

Shipping adds transit time to everything, so the season starts earlier and ends earlier than the counter trade.

  • Four to five weeks before Diwali: boxes finalised, weights measured, Shiprocket connected, one test parcel sent to a friend in another city.
  • Three weeks before: open pre-orders. Announce the box on Instagram and with a WhatsApp campaign to last year's customers, with the box price and the last order date in the message.
  • Ten days before: last date for remote PIN codes, because a 5 to 7 day transit misses the festival after this.
  • Six days before: last date for metro addresses. Close the shipping category or snooze it after this, so nobody orders a box that cannot arrive in time.
  • Last five days: local delivery and pickup only, which is also when the fresh sweets sell.

Put the cut-off dates in the box description and in the campaign, and honour them. A box that arrives two days after Diwali costs you the refund and the review. The pre-order playbook for the season, including how to word the announcement, is in Diwali sweets and gift box orders on WhatsApp, and the counter side of the festival, moving the queue to WhatsApp pickup slots, is in self-pickup for sweet shops.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ship sweets across India from my sweet shop?

Yes, if you choose sweets that keep for several days at room temperature, pack them in sealed inner packs inside a rigid box, and use a courier. Dry fruit laddoos, chikki, namkeen and well-packed kaju katli ship; anything in syrup or made of fresh milk does not. Prepaid orders through a courier aggregator such as Shiprocket are the usual setup.

How much does it cost to courier a box of mithai?

Shiprocket and other aggregators charge by weight slab and destination, on rate cards published on their sites. A 1 kg parcel to a metro commonly costs less than the same parcel to a remote PIN code. Weigh the packed box including the carton and filler, since slabs usually step every 500 g, and price the box or the shipping charge from your own first few shipments.

How do I take sweet box orders from other cities on WhatsApp?

Put the shippable boxes on your menu with "ships across India" in the description, take the full postal address and prepaid payment at checkout, and push the order to the courier from your dashboard. On Tezzu the order carries the address, the AWB and the tracking status, and you share the tracking number with the customer in the same WhatsApp chat.

When should I stop taking Diwali orders for shipping?

Count back from the festival by the transit time plus a day of margin. Remote PIN codes need five to seven days, so close them about ten days before Diwali; metro addresses need two to four days, so close them about six days before. State the cut-off in the box description and in any campaign, then switch the shipping category off for the last days.
