Click-to-WhatsApp Ads for Home Bakers: Instagram Ads That Open a Chat

Click-to-WhatsApp ads for a bakery do one thing a normal Instagram ad cannot: when the viewer taps, a WhatsApp chat with your number opens, and if an ordering bot is running on that number, the chat can take the cake order on the spot. No landing page, no form, no "DM for price". For a home baker whose customers already find her on Instagram, this closes the gap between seeing a cake and ordering one.

This post walks through click-to-WhatsApp ads on Tezzu's Growth plan for a home bakery: what happens after the tap, how to set the ad up in Meta's ads tools, what a small budget buys, what the pre-order with a collection time looks like, and the creative that tends to work for cakes.

Why a bakery ad should open a chat and not a website

Most home bakers run on Instagram already, and the ordering path is a DM: "how much for a 1 kg chocolate cake", "can you do Saturday", "send your UPI". Every one of those messages is answered by hand, usually in the evening, and the customer who asked at 11 am has often moved on by then.

An Instagram ad that sends people to a website adds a step and loses most of them on the way. An ad that opens WhatsApp meets the customer where they were going anyway, and if the number has a bot behind it, the price question, the date question and the payment question are answered in the chat without you. The general mechanics, including how Meta charges for these ads, are in click-to-WhatsApp ads: how restaurants turn ad clicks into orders.

What happens after the tap

Here is the flow for a customer who sees your ad on Instagram on Tuesday evening.

  1. They tap "Send message" on the ad. WhatsApp opens with your bakery's number and a pre-filled first message, such as "Hi, I saw your cake ad".
  2. The bot replies with a greeting and the menu: cakes by flavour and size, brownies, cupcakes, with photos and prices.
  3. They pick a 1 kg Belgian chocolate cake at ₹1,100 and add a message-on-cake note.
  4. At checkout they choose pickup or delivery. For pickup they select a collection slot, Saturday 4 to 5 pm. For delivery they enter an address and see the charge for their zone.
  5. They pay by UPI or card. The confirmation arrives in the chat with the cake, the date, the slot and the amount.
  6. The order appears in your dashboard and staff app with Saturday's date on it.

You were not in that conversation. If the customer has a question the bot cannot answer, they type it and you reply in the same chat when you are free, with the order already placed and paid. The bot's part of this, greeting to confirmation, is the same one that runs for customers who message you without an ad; the pre-order and collection time setup is in pre-orders with collection time for home bakers.

Setting up the ad

Click-to-WhatsApp ads are created in Meta's ads tools, either by boosting an Instagram post or through Ads Manager. The important choices:

  • Objective: messages, with WhatsApp as the destination. This is what makes the tap open a chat instead of a link.
  • Number: the WhatsApp Business number connected to your Tezzu account, so the bot answers.
  • Audience: a radius around your kitchen that matches your delivery zones and how far people will drive for pickup. For most home bakers that is 5 to 10 km, not the whole city.
  • Pre-filled message: a short line that tells the bot the context, such as "Hi, I want to order a cake".
  • Schedule: run the ad Tuesday to Thursday for weekend cakes, so orders arrive before you plan Friday's baking.

The ad must comply with Meta's advertising policies, and the WhatsApp number must be a Business API number in good standing, which it is once connected through Tezzu's embedded signup.

What a small budget buys

Meta charges for these ads per result, commonly per conversation started, and the price depends on your city, your audience and your creative. The numbers below are illustrative, to show how to think about it; your own cost per chat will differ and Meta shows it in the ads dashboard.

LineIllustrative figure
Budget, Tuesday to Thursday at ₹300 a day₹900
Cost per chat started (illustrative)₹20
Chats opened45
Chats that become orders (illustrative 1 in 6)7 or 8
Average cake order₹1,100
Revenue from the week's adsAbout ₹8,000
Tezzu per-order charge on 8 orders₹80

If those assumptions hold, ₹900 of ads brings around ₹8,000 of cakes, and you can see every step in your own data: Meta's dashboard shows chats started, Tezzu's dashboard shows orders placed, and the gap between the two is what the bot and your menu photos are converting. If the gap is wide, fix the menu before increasing the budget. Costs per chat vary widely by city and season, so treat the first two weeks as a test.

What this looks like on Tezzu

Click-to-WhatsApp ads are included on the Growth plan. The number your ad points to is the one connected to Tezzu through Meta's embedded signup, so the moment the chat opens, the ordering bot answers in Hindi or English, shows the bakery menu with photos, and takes the order through to payment. There is no separate ad-only flow; a customer from an ad and a customer who found your number on a packaging sticker get the same bot and the same menu.

The pieces a home baker needs are already in the menu and settings. Cakes are items with variants for size and flavour and an add-on for a message on the cake. Pre-orders are switched on so the customer picks a date, and a self-pickup point with collection slots is set so Saturday afternoon pickups spread across the hour instead of all arriving at 4. Delivery zones with distance-based charges cover customers who want it brought to them. Payment runs through Razorpay for UPI and cards, or cash on collection if you allow it.

Orders from the ad land in the live dashboard and the staff app with their collection or delivery date, so Friday's baking list is the orders list filtered to Saturday. The customer gets WhatsApp updates as the order moves to ready and collected, and a rating request after. Every customer who ordered is now in your customer list, which means the next launch, a Christmas plum cake or a Diwali box, can go out as a campaign to people who have bought before. The ad features, campaigns and the rest of the Growth plan are on the features page, and the home-baker setup is on Tezzu for home bakers.

Creative that works for cakes

One cake, one photo, one price, one occasion. "1 kg Belgian chocolate, ₹1,100, order by Thursday for Saturday pickup" beats a carousel of twelve cakes with "DM for prices". The price in the ad filters out people who were never going to buy, which lowers your cost per real chat even if it raises the cost per tap.

Use a photo of the actual cake you will bake, cut, with the inside showing. Add a short line about the collection or delivery option, because "pickup Saturday 4 to 6 pm in Koramangala" tells the customer the ad is local and real. Rotate the hero cake every two weeks so regulars do not tune the ad out. How the ad fits with organic posts, reels and bio links is in home bakery marketing on Instagram and WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

How do click-to-WhatsApp ads work for a home bakery?

You run an Instagram or Facebook ad with messages as the objective and WhatsApp as the destination. When someone taps it, a chat opens with your bakery's number and a pre-filled message. If an ordering bot runs on that number, as it does with Tezzu, the bot shows the menu, takes the order with a date and a collection slot, and collects payment, without you replying by hand.

Do I need a website to run Instagram ads for my bakery?

No. A click-to-WhatsApp ad sends the customer to a chat, not a web page. The bot or your store page handles the menu and payment inside WhatsApp. If you want a page to link from your bio as well, the free store page that comes with the ordering setup does that job without a separate website.

How much do click-to-WhatsApp ads cost for a small bakery?

Meta charges per result, usually per conversation started, and the rate depends on your city, audience and creative. Small bakers typically run a few hundred rupees a day for two or three days before a weekend. Treat the first fortnight as a test, read the cost per chat in Meta's dashboard and the orders in your own, and adjust the budget from there.

Can the ad take a cake pre-order for a specific date?

The ad opens the chat; the ordering bot behind the number takes the pre-order. On Tezzu the customer picks a date and a pickup slot or a delivery address at checkout, pays by UPI or card, and the order appears in your dashboard with that date on it, so you bake against a list rather than against a thread of DMs.
